Good guess, GPM! He very clearly had a "double" aspect to his life--his writing personas (one Mark Twain, the other Samuel Clemens), which each reflect a different aspect of his writing/thinking skill; as well as his actual life...which progressed and flourished with his writing, but also with his speaking and orations (he was extremely successful as an entertainer this way, much to his surprise). When his family passed away, he mourned deeply but then "began his life anew", seemingly exposing a side of his personality he did not express before their deaths. He changed his clothing, his life style, his means of supporting himself--everything! He was so popular and so well known for his honesty and forthright satire, that he earned huge sums of money for his work; yet he longed to be "successful" in business--and lost fortunes through some very idealistic business endeavors. There was a very clear, very remarkable division yet cohesion of these two "sides" of himself, something he was always, on some level, aware of.
He lived a very long, prolific, tragic, joyous, humourous, outspoken, and compassionate life.
