Hi all,
I have a few questions. First: does anyone know if Hahnemann has ever mentioned (and where) that Drosera should or could be used as a prophylactic remedy for whooping cough? Secondly: my dear friend has a 7 month old unvaccinated daughter and there is whooping cough in two of the neighbours' children. Should she consider something as a prophylactic or get some remedies to have in hand, in case...? Third question is about malaria prophylactics. One of my friends is moving to Afganistan and wouldn't like to take the malaria-pills and asks if there is any homeopathic remedies to take instead. I recall there was some discussion earlier, but couldn't find it from the archives. All answers would be appreciated! Thanks. |

If you look on David Little's website,
www.similibus.com (I think). You will be able to find some remedies to keep handy for malaria. Natrum Muriaticum and China are 2 that come to mind, right away. Drosera may have been used as a prophylactic in a specific epidemic IF it was determined to be one of the Genus Epidemicus remedies for that particular outbreak. This does not mean it should be used as a prophylactic. It can be a good remedy to have on hand should the whooping cough actually affect the child. The best thing to keep on hand in the case of any approaching illness is the first aid kit, and, if you're lucky and see a homeopath already, you may know of your own similimum remedy. That is likely to address any illness, should it befall the child. In any case, nothing works better than giving the appropriate remedy to match the symptoms. Other than that, the best thing to do is wait until you have symptoms on which to prescribe before giving a remedy. Best precautions are still eating well, maintaining good hygiene, getting enough rest, and drinking enough fluids. Also consider the well documented fact that those who seem to be the most susceptible in these whooping cough outbreaks are children who have been vaccinated against the disease. It may very well be that this unvaccinated child will have all the resistance he needs simply because he was not vaccinated. Let's hope so. Divina

Dear Hype
Out of curiousity - do you know if the children with pertussis were vaccinated?

Dear Hype,
my 5 year old had whooping cough last fall (not vaccinated). I gave one dose of Pertussin 200C once I knew he had been exposed and showed some initial symptoms. The whoop came anyway. From then on I prescribed (with the help of some very kind people on this forum) according to symptom picture. The whole thing lasted about 4 weeks altogether, with no complications. Would I say the Pertussinum didn't protect? It didn't prevent it entirely, but then in hindsight his symptoms never got very severe (no vomiting, not too many spasmodic coughing spells - though it seemed awful at the time). If Drosera comes into the picture, please note that Hahnemann warns not to repeat the dose too quickly in his MM Pura: "Care should be taken not to give a second dose (or any other medicine) immediately after the first dose, for that would inevitably not only prevent the good result, but do serious injury...". The waiting is especially difficult, if you don't see an improvement right away. A good way of keeping track once the cough breaks out is to note down the number of attacks the child has. Good luck and best wishes, Karin |

My experience:
My two children had whooping cough (despite the older one's having been vaccinated,) when I was first learning about homeopathy. They whooped, coughed, gagged, and vomited. I gave them Ipecac 30c, and the whooping stopped, but the other symptoms continued. I took them to the homeopath repeatedly, and he gave them various remedies according to the symptoms, and Tuberculinum, but the symptoms continued, all except for the whoop. They vomited about every 45 minutes, day and night, for 6 weeks. I was doing everything I could to get some electrolytes to stay inside and I guess I succeeded, since they survived. Finally, I insisted to the homeopath that this had begun with a whoop, and he gave them Pertussinum 200c. Silence. We slept all night, not one more cough! It did turn out that I had to give it about every 2nd day for awhile, but then they were fine. He also gave a friend Pertussinum 30c for her child, and it didn't help. Only the 200c of mine helped her. Just thought I'd mention it in case someone else has the same response and the info might be helpful.
