Hi Jay

Murphey has a whole seperate chapter on FOOD.

page 738 lists LEMONS, DESIRES; ars, BELL, benz, benz ac, merc(2), nabal, nat mur, puls, sabad(2), SEP, sul ac, tarant(2), verat.

I like Murphy the best as far as ease of use goes - it is also reasonably priced.

I have the COMPLETE rep too and find it to be more thorough than MURPHYS but it is costly AND giganticwhich just makes it inconvienent to use.

Dear Tomi,

The difference between The first and second edition of Murphy's repertory is the addition of a number of new chapters. I have the first ed. in my car--so not here with me now. Look to see if the following new chapters are in your book, if not, they're in the 2nd ed.:

Ankles, Arms, Blood, Bones, Brain, Breasts, Children, Constitutions, Delusions, Diseases, Dreams, Elbows, Emergency,
Environment, Feet, Food, Glands, Hands, Headaches, Heart, Joints, Hips, Legs, Liver, Lungs, Muscles, Neck, Nerves, Pelvis, Pregnancy, Pulse, Tongue, Toxicity, Wrists.

Hi Carol,
The Complete Rep comes in one of two ways. You either by the BIG book which contains everything that is found in the 3 volumes - or you buy the three volumes (3books) which has everything in the BIG book .

I bought the three separate volumes because I thought it would be easier to handle - and it is . And it was the same price. You can find out more on their website....err- uhm, maybe JVolkman can give you the link? I don't have it handy.

Complete is good, if you understand and take note of the references with regards to the remedies listed under each rubric. It is all sourced.

I wouldn't use Murhpy's - at least not until I had heaps of experience...too easy to fall into the trap of allopathic precribing - err - prescribing on disease names AND what if you 'misdiagnose'? Anyhow, those are my thoughts. And, I think David made a very good point...too many remedies often listed under a rubric, and without a solid working knowledge of MM, how would one truly discern which remedy was needed?

In any case, Jayj, if you aren't trained - please don't try to self-prescribe..it can be a distaster.

All the best,
Lisa

Wow thanks everyone for all the responses.
I found a site for Roger van Zandvoort Complete repertory http://www.irhis.nl/ if anyone else is interested. So far, I havent been able to figure out how to get into the online repertory tho and actually get remedy list. But it looks very interesting and complete. I am thinking of enrolling in the Devon School of Homeopathy and on their book list they list Boericke and Kents Repertory (list 1) and for further study (list 11a)Schroyens Synthesis Repertory. Any comments on those books. Also.... after reading some of the posts in the archives (and some more recent ones) I get the feeling that there are some who have a problem with Kentian homeopathy. I am still researching various correspondance courses but it seems to me that most of them had Kents books listed as requirements. Perhaps someone would like to enlighten me here
I received the Organon of the Medical Art, edited and annotated by Wenda Brewster O'Reilly for Christmas. Is this book a true translation or will I have to buy another for the course? Thanks all and have a great day!

Hi Jayj,
Yep, that is the link!! Thanks for finding it .

Most courses will teach you using Kent (to start off) and then go on to teach Boenninghausen later. I believe, if I'm not mistaken (and I could be because I haven't checked my 3rd year list) Devon School teaches the Boenninghausen method in 3rd year.

I still don't understand it all (ref your comments on the various methods), but I do know that Hans has studied this in depth for years now and has a good working knowledge of the Boenninghausen method of prescribing.

That said, there is nothing to prevent you from learning Kent and once you've studied a while - moving on to Boenninghausen, as your knowledge grows. Hans may not entirely agree with me on this (above), but, I think he would agree it does no harm to learn them both, BUT as long as one truly thinks things through and constantly references the Organon to make sure one really understands how both methods work (Kent/Bnhsn) and where they are different from each other. The main thing, I've come to understand thus far is that whatever method I choose MUST be in line with what is in the Organon...so get ready to study that baby backwards and forwards, otherwise you end up just drinking/eating all that is fed to you without questioning anything...and that ain't learning .

Also, Boericke is good, imo - he had an MM/Rep combined, in case you're interested in that one. He also did the original English translation of the Organon, so you would most likely be required to purchase the Organon that he authored/translated (it is 6th Edition and some say it is the closest translation as German was his mother tongue). It isn't that expensive - as it comes in the Indian Edition. I also have Brewster's translation and the other one by Naudé, Kunzli and Pendleton, but I like the good old Boericke and have no problem understanding it (some do apparently).

There is another college in London called the London College of Classical Homeopathy if you're looking for Classical - but I think they only offer their first year via correspondence and then the subsequent years are at the college itself. Devon is Classical too - but some say they focus too much on the Mental/Emotional sphere of prescribing. I take my courses through Devon School and to be honest, I've never felt pressured to go the Mental/Emotional route without considering ALL the aspects (and this is/was important to me in my own process of learning!!).

If you are in the USA for your studies, then maybe someone else can advise where a good college would be for you. I know that Devon School offers the North American Flexible Learning Program, but I think you've probably already found that info on their site.

Hope this is of some help to you,
Good luck and Happy New Year!
Lisa

PS You have to sign up with Complete to access the online Rep - and it doesn't always work well (well, I never manage to rep a case on it from beginning to end...only found a rubric here and there and then it would stop working!)...I gave up and bought the book and I am glad I did.

Hey Carol...just looked at the site..and it is USD200 not 350 .

Here is the info..pasted:
ISBN TITLE
90-801878-1-x the Complete Repertory mind
(vol. I, no thumb index) Nlg. 160,-
(USD 85)
paperback Nlg. 95,-
(USD 50)
90-801878-5-2 the Complete Repertory vertigo - speech & voice
(vol. II) Nlg. 175,-
(USD 87.50)
90-801878-6-0 the Complete Repertory respiration - generalities
(vol. III) Nlg. 175,-
(USD 87.50)
90-801878-3-6 the Complete Repertory mind - generalities
(All-in-one volume) by Roger van Zandvoort Nlg. 325,-
(USD 200)
90-801878-2-8 the Complete Materia Medica Mind
by Heli Retzek Nlg. 200,-
(USD 100)
90-801878-4-4 the Thematic Repertory
by J.A. Mirilli
More information about Mirilli's book Nlg. 180,-
(USD 90)

So, it is USD257 for 3 separate volumes and only 200 for the All in One book....but I seem to remember paying the same price...but anyone can email them on info@irhis.nl and ask to be sure .

Oh, I was charged in their currency (Netherlands) and then it was converted so the USD prices are approximate and can change with the rate of exchange!!

Thanks Lisa,

I do have Boericke Homeopathic MM with Rep on order but thought I would like to have something more in depth. I figure that it is basically the same as what is available at http://www.homeoint.org/books/boericmm/index.htm but in a format that is easily transported. I am hoping that it will have more tho.

You have 3 translations of Organon I move far too often, and have a heavy load of reference books already. I hope that Brewsters version will do for me. I suppose as I get into it I can always cross reference to http://homeoint.org/books/hahorgan/index.htm which is said to be 6th Edition Boericke.

Yes I did register for Complete but it still wasnt working, thanks for the confirmation that it is not always fully functioning.

I am kind of international with no idea where I will be next, which is the reason I am looking at Devons International Program. I will have to wait and see where I am on this planet when I complete the course, then look at where to do the clinical. Long way away now........

A HUGE Thank you to all the Homeopaths who participate on this bulletin board for sharing their knowledge and thoughts, it has made my informal study of homeopathy absolutely fascinating and thought provoking.

Dear Lisa and others,

Regarding what you said about how Murphy's repertory would tempt one to prescribe on disease names (I'm assuming because of the Disease and Emergency chapters), the fact is, regardless of whose repertory you have, sometimes you really do need a disease remedy. Sometimes it is frivolous to take a complete case, when someone, for example, has been bitten by a snake; or a person has dysentery, or a person has edema from kidney failure, you really do need to know the differentials for these conditions; and by that I mean the top 5 or 10 remedies that historically have succussfully treated these cases. We should know about Aconite, Arnica, Cactus, Spigelia, Arsenicum and Latrodectus for heart attack. Does anyone really think that in order to prescribe for a heart attack you have to take a complete case? "But your childhood...how was your childhood?? Hello? Hmm. Aversion to answering."

Hi Snoopy,

Did you read the case of 1 year old child suffering from cerebro-spinal meningitis on the Repetition of Dose thread?
I would seriously doubt that David Little went to the Diseases chapter in Murphy's Repertory before treating this child. But if he had he would have seen APIS, BELL, HELL, STRAM, and ZINC recommended as bold type remedies.
Which is fine, except that it was Sulphur that cured the case in 2 and a half days and brought this child back from the brink of death.
Belladonna as a well-documented curative remedy in these types of cases was momentarily effective but didn't match the case where it counted most.
I doubt also that David Little would have conducted a 2 hour consultation beforehand in a comfortable air-conditioned clinic with the soft strains of New Age music wafting healing energies through to the soul of the sick child. I doubt also if he would have spent time placing special emphasis on whether the child had an easy birth, or whether the mother's pregnancy was OK, or what the maternal and paternal grandparents medical history may show in terms of miasms, etc, etc, etc. That said, he did keep a cool head, and used well-grounded practical Hahnemannian principles to save a child's life.

These types of clinical examples will always impress me more than those that are resolved because the practitioner simply got lucky.
