Now a days I am enjoying my retired life. Just to kill the time in some fruitful way. Recently I joined in homeopathic course. I hope all of you will not discourage me on getting/asking informations on homeopathy. Altough I am convinced that homeopathy works and works well. I am already aware of homeopathic field.

What is polycrest?
What is the criteria of naming them?
How many polycrest potencies, we have in homeopathy?

Dear Sozo,

There are perhaps 25 or so polychrests. They're remedies that have many uses and affect many parts of the body; for instance, Phosphorus is good for mental/emotional problems, the heart, the lungs, kidney/bladder, the nervous system....

Whereas on the other hand, there are "small" remedies, that are used for perhaps one thing; for instance, Thiosinaminum, is used almost exclusively for resolving scar tissue.

Sozo,

Hahnemann defines polycrest:"There are a few remedies in which the majority of symptoms corresponds in similarity to some common diseases, and which can therefore often be applied homeopathically. We could call these remedies polychrests." My interpretation of this is that a polychrest is a remedy that is commonly used because they represent the more common disease(s) of man.
My understanding of 'small remedies' differs from that of Snoopy. My understanding is that a small remedy is a remedy whose provings and clinical use are not extensive.... Denise

Dear Denise,

I wouldn't disagree with your interpretation of
"small remedy".

Dear Sozo,

I'll try to explain once more. Some remedies are small just because they haven't been extensively "proved"--meaning experimented with or used on enough volunteers or given often enough to get a complete picture of the remedy's potential.

Other remedies are small because in the provings, their range of activity may have been limited to only one sphere, while having no effect on the mentals or emotionals, etc. of the provers.

The polychrests, on the other hand, had an action on the whole person in the provings; hence, "many uses" which is what polychrest means.

Any home remedy kit sold by a homeopathic pharmacy will have mostly all the polychrest remedies in it.

Hi all,

I couldn't keep myself away.

To my knowledge polychrest remedies are those remedies that have poly characteristic.

Just an idea. This question could be asked from C A R A that is Miccant Ltd. Nottingham, Uk. They have got a complete list of polychrest remedies and they can also explain the criteria of naming.

Hi!

From Dunhan MM under Pulsatilla.

Polychrest is a term applied to a number of the remedies that are the most frequently used in practice, and that have an extensive range of application.
It would be an error, however, to suppose that a polychrest, which is called for every day, is any more useful in any given case than a drug that we are required to give only once a year will be in the case which requires it. It must never be forgotten that every case requires just the identical remedy which is most homoeopathic to it, even if it be a rare and seldom used remedy, and that no other remedy, however popularly or however constantly in use, can be as good as, or can take the place of, this homoeopathically indicated remedy.
But just as some disease are very common, being met with every day. such as dyspepsias, bronchial catarrh, diarrhoea, ephemeral fever, etc., so there are certain remedies which produce, when proved upon the healthy, series of symptoms similar to those of these frequently recurring diseases. It is obvious that these remedies will be frequently indicated in practice, will be often used an in many cases. These remedies are our polychrests. We must know them well, although it is of great importance that, in bending ourselves to the study of them, we neglect none of the other remedies of our materia medica.
