Hi all, I just received a call from my daughter-in-law. Her brother was in an accident last night that resulted in him receiving a broken jaw that will require surgery today. I told her to give him Arnica before and after the surgery. Any other suggestions on remedies to help with the healing process? I don't have my repertory with me at the moment...it's amazing how much I've come to depend on it!

Thanks,

Lynn

Hi Lynn,

Post operative medicines which you should have are the following:

Hypericum: For the injury to the the nerves during the accident and after the surgery.

Staphysagria: For the fine cuts by the Surgeon.

Leedum: For the punctured wounds performed by the injecting needles.

And as you know Arnica is needed before and after the operations to get rid of Trauma, Bruises etc.etc.

Any suggestions for potencies and frequencies of dosing for the above mentioned remedies?

As Kescah suggested Symphytum is the best remedy to take for all fractures once they have been set correctly. It will heal the break in about 2/3rds of the time it would be expected to take. Take the 6x three tims a day for 2 -3 weeks. It will also help with the pain.

A reminder about symphytum--use it once the break has been set correctly. Healing will take place quickly, but you'll want to be sure about the proper setting.

One other remedy I would have handy is phosphorus--for any ill effects resulting from the anaesthetic. This is really helpful--especially if there is vomitting immediately after consciousness is regained. I'd have it handy in a 30c for this purpose.

Thanks Divina, you're exactly right. Arnica before surgery in a 200C will cover a lot; but the main remedy, and the first remedy, one might require after surgery is phosphorus; followed by daily low doses of symphytum as has been said. As for the other remedies, give in a 30 C as needed.
For instance, pain from needles might call for Ledum 30 C as needed; shooting pain would call for Hypericum; pain from the incision might call for Staphysagria. Sore, aching pain might call for more Arnica.

I personally have never prescribed higher than a 30C potency for Arnica before or after an operation and it does do the trick. A 200 is given when a longer time has elapsed since the shock/accident/operation that a patient has never been well since. Arnica 30 should be repeated up to 3x a day for the first couple of days to prevent bruising and pain. Ledum is only necessary if the bruising fail to dissipate. Phosphorus is onl needed if there is any problem from the anaesthetic or for haemorrhaging.
All the best.
