This refers to compression and irritation of nerves (posterior tibialis and plantar nerves) at the tarsal tunnel. The tarsal tunnel is located at the back and bottom of the inside ankle bone (the posterior/inferior medial malleolus). Similar to carpal tunnel syndrome at the wrist, symptoms can include pain, numbness and tingling. In tarsal tunnel syndrome these symptoms occur at the inside ankle and sole of the foot.

Hi David,
Have you seen my post dated 9th October 2001, asking for the Expert Advice on 'Burning Soles of the Feet'? Can the 'Burning soles of the feet' be linked to the 'Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome'? Chetan ![]() |

Yes, but with TTS one would often have some discomfort around the tarsal tunnel and medial ankle as well, especially with pressure or tapping on the TT area. Although TTS could cause burning soles of the feet, not all burning soles are due to TTS.

The outside ankle bone is the lateral malleolus, and the peroneal tendon and sural nerve are in this area. Depending on the signs and symptoms, you could have peroneal tendinitis or sural neuropathy, neither of which are very common. Nerve problems tend to manifest with numbness, tingling, burning, and/or shooting pain. Tendinitis is usually a sore, achey type of pain which often improves to some degree during use, but then returns after activity is stopped.

My problem is a sharp pain on left side of ankle..(next to achillies tendon?)that comes out of the blue and returns to the blue. I have also had a pain on bottom of my left heal a few times that comes for a few days and then just goes away. Is this something I should worry about?

Hi Carol,
It could be a calcaneal spur. Alot of people have them and never know about it is found incidentally on an Xray. However they can get painful from time to time especially after alot of weightbearing exercise. Basically it is an overgrowth of bone on the underside of the calcaneum (os calcis) Nobody really knows why they occur but I have found a large incidence of them in people with high bone density in my work with osteoporosis. You haven't been overdoing the calcium or been on a calc remedy have you ?? |

I did have calc carb the remedy sometime this year....maybe thats when it came. Weight bearing excercise? I give massage and its conceivable that when I push against the body with my hands that my feet push into the floor. Would that be considered weight bearing?
