Just testing my acute skills here. A freind is 25 and tells me she awoke at 2am with really horrible neausea - she needed to keep her legs drawn up to chest - worse if she straightened them out. The neausea gradually turned into severe, horrible cramping in the intestines - felt as strong as "transitional phase labor pains" She lay curled up thinking "OH GOD, OH GOD" over and over until the pains faded. Flatus helped. Eventually the pains caused diarrhea - at first soft then liquid, stool brown, not explosive. Diarrhea ameliorated the pain. She believes this was caused by something she ate that night but not sure what - thinks it may be from ice cream - or fatty foods.
so what would have been suggested? I have one major remedy in mind with a backup one but want to know what others think.

Forgot to mention that my friend did ask me to post this in case another attack comes - apparently this was not the first (by the way I never knew this about her - now we have one more thing in common). She did say too that she gets sweaty when the pain comes, not really a cold sweat though more warm. Even though the diarhea ameliorates the pain there is still an insecure feeling in her abdomen and she stays close to home for a day or two after an attack.

In this order!!
1. Arsenicum for food poisoning
2. Mag. Phos for cramps
3. Verat Al also good for these symptoms

I have to say that I was dosing a friend with Ars. and suddenly I looked at her and saw belladonna - dilated pupils, red face etc. It cured!!

Dear Barb,

The minute you see the doubled up position you think of colocynth--though Mag-phos has this too. Veratrum alb has the praying--"Oh God Oh God!" When the cause may have been rich/fatty food, think of pulsatilla.

The important thing in a case like this is to have a home remedy kit, and never think you have to get the remedy right the first time, cause I hardly ever do! But you try a remedy--like arsenicum, which is the leader for food poisoning, and you'll know shortly if it's the right one, in a severe acute, 5 minutes is enough time, and if nothing happens, go to the next one. In this case, I'd have lined up Colo., Verat., and Puls.

My first choices would have been colocynthis and Mag Phos--the doubled over position, as a result of cramping...

Carbo v, ver.v not ver a., staphysagria, lyc , nux, chelid, lycop, cham also fits depending on the cause.
Combine stomach, pain, cramping, bending forward amel, or drawing up limbs amel, + stool amel, 2-4AM worse and chel is the remedy.
In fact all of these are chelidonium keys. Colo usually worse afternoon 4 -5 PM.

With Verat Vir for this case I thought of:
- periodically of problem - "apparently this was not the first"
- better after stool - "diarrhea ameliorated the pain"
I did't recall these two subtle characteristics specifically in Verat Alb. They were more exact for Verat Vir.
It was a gut feeling for this case. It wasn't the remedy I went with as Verat Vir is worse usually 1 to 10 PM among other things.
