I just wanted to let someone who cares know what is going on in our state right now.
. We have a 4 year old. One of our homebirth babies who has been diagnosed with leukemia. She saw an alternative Dr who did some tests on her and informed her parents that she she suspected leukemia and Lily was in dire need of a transfusion as her Hgb was 3. They took her to hospital where they did give her blood and ran some tests and she does have the disease. the hospital Dr. detailed out a 2 year plan for chemo in which Lily would be very sick and only have a 20% chance for survival. The parents said they would have to pray about it first but at this point they wanted to pursue homeopathy not chemo. Dr. returned notifying the parents that they had notified Child Protective Services and if they refused the allopathic treatment that a judge would be assigning a new gaurdian for Lily and they would proceed with the chemo anyway. They are offering poison, which will make her have two years of pain and misery and still only a 20% survival rate and yet they can force her parents to put her through it even though it does not line up with their moral, spiritual or ethical belief. And this is America... land of the free Michelle |

Dear Michelle,
Is this a family you know or just news in the paper? Yes, this is the good ol' USA alright. This practice of doctors reporting people who use alternative medicine is legend! I thought everyone knew by now to keep their mouths shut around doctors--but maybe this couple is young. Actually, what Ricky said is true, you can give the homeopathic disease remedy, ars. for instance, 6C three times a day; when the chemo comes, cadmium sulph 30C can be taken as needed for side effects, and the child can pull through it, though these doctors have some nerve! Strutting around like peacocks when they can't cure anything! Snoopy |

If they do plan to flee the country, as JVolkman suggested (which was also my first thought) they best do it quickly and think about going via Canada. Protective services will move in quickly for something like this even though they never seem to have the time to investigate complaints that lead to the violent death of a child.
I read about an attorney in California who represents parents in suits regarding non-vaccination issues. There is a problem about a government feeling they have the right to impose invasive treatment, injecting substances into the body. Maybe JVolkman will be able to find this info for you. I'm sorry but I lost everything on my PC due to the house being hit by lightening and killing my PC. Even if they contact an attorney, they should think about disappearing for the moment. If the child is in the hospital it will take some maneuvering but it can be done. Friends of mine who are both doctors have a child diagnosed with a brain tumor. They elected to have no treatment whatsoever and took him home. Perhaps it was "allowed" because they are doctors? Terribly sorry and hope all works out for these poor parents.

Or maybe Mexico? Aren't the specialty clinics just across the border? JVolkman?

Hi Michelle,
Since the cat's out of the bag so to speak, I too think the best approach (unless they can hook up with an attorney very quickly)is to go the complementary route with chemo and use homeopathy to counter the side affects and support the child during the process. My mother was diagnosed with cancer about three years ago at the age of 78. She had two types and one of them had metastisized. She also had heart problems and Parkinsons and the oncologist gave her about six months. He didn't think her heart could take the chemo and he thought that even the most intense chemo would not completely irradicate the cancer. We took her to our homeopath and he suggested going the complementary route rather than just homeopathy. She requested the strongest possible chemo from the oncologist, which was given for eight months. Our homeopath began with her constitutional remedy monthly and then occassionally interspersed a specific remedy if she had symptoms. She lost some of her hair, but not all of it and she was tired, but NO OTHER SIDE EFFECTS from the chemo. She has been cancer free for two years now, so I know from personal experience that homeopathy can be of tremendous help. Shirley Reischman [ 28 July 2001: Message edited by: sreischman ]

To all that have posted thanks for your input. This family is one that is very near and dear to us. She is a two time homebirth mom and client of mine. She runs the friends of midwives group here. They have decided to wait for the results of the bone marrow biopsy before they decide to flee or stay. They have also been working with a doctor that evaluates the body based on a test he runs on saliva. This guy is the one that identified the leukemia in the first place. I don't know anything about it but he then makes a homeopathic remedy from the saliva? she has been taking this for the last couple of days and her blood tests have been coming back better than they expected. i don't know anything about this kind of "homeopathy". Does anyone else?

It's called isopathy and works with urine and blood as well as saliva.Since it is expensive to produce it is usually done as a last resort when the normal remedies haven;t done anything. It could well work!!!

Would like to add that in the US the First Amendment still holds, freedom of religion. Sounds like a strange application to this situation but any "firmly held conviction" is considered "religion" under the law, as long as those convictions were held and lived accordingly, prior to the problem. It can be used as the legal stance in opposition to forced medical care. There does not need to be any affiliation with any organized religion. It is based on one's individual convictions. Your convictions are your religion, the standard by which you live your life. If things get difficult they may want to contact the ACLU for direction although they generally consider group actions more readily than idividual situations. But they may be able to guide the parents on how to approach pending litigation.
