Question

HI ALL. THIS IS MY FIRST TIME ONLINE SO BE GENTLE.
I WAS PRESCRIBED BUSPAR, A DRUG TO COUNTERACT ANXIETY ATTACKS THAT I HAVE HAD SINCE I WAS LITTLE. THEY JUST DISCOVERED WHAT I WAS EXPIRIENCING SO I HAVE NOT TAKEN THS DRUG FOR MORE THAN A MONTH. I HAVE HAD VERY EXTREME SIDE AFFECTS AND THE DOCTOR SUGGESTED THAT I TRY A NATURAL ALTERNATIVE. I HAVE FOUND THREE THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO BE GOOD, BUT WHAT ONE DO I GO WITH:ST.JOHN'S WORT, KAVA, LYCOPODIUM. ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED.

Spaden, you are lucky to have a doctor that is willing to refer you to natural treatment alternatives. Homeopathic treatment can certainly cure anxiety attacks. It has really helped my own problems with anxiety. But the correct remedy depends on your individual symptoms, so it's hard to make a blanket recommendation. For example, at what time of day do the attacks occur? Are they better or worse from fresh air? Any other factors that bring them on, such as certain foods or drinks, or being hot or cold? The correct remedy for you depends on your answers to questions like these. Lycopodium is just one of dozens of homeopathic remedies that may help. Kava is generally considered an herbal remedy, while St. John's Wort can be used homeopathically depending on how it is prepared.

Some other members of this discussion may want to hazard a guess on the right remedy based on your answers, but if you have had these attacks since childhood the best way to go is probably to consult a professional homeopath in your area. The referral list of US homeopaths at www.homeopathy-cures.com is very reliable.

Spaden,

I too suffered from severe anxiety since childhood, although mine was of a chronic nature. Homeopathy has helped me greatly, and after having tried many different approaches including drugs and St. John's Wort, I am a fervent believer in the miraculous healing powers of these remedies. I am one of the few people who has successfully self-prescribed for this type of problem so I recommend you find a skilled practitioner to help you. According to homepathic principles, there is only one remedy, the "simillimum", that will be truly curative for you. And sometimes these cases require a series of rems. Good luck to you.

Dear Spaden,

A homeopath will undoubtedly charge anywhere between $150 and $250 for the first visit. If you can't afford it, tell us all about yourself--that's what we're here for.

WELL, HERE IS A DISCRIPTION OF HOW I AM EFFECTED. WHEN I AM READY TO GO SOMEWHERE I START TO GET NERVOUS AND MY HEART STARTS FLUTTERING. DEPENDING ON IF I WILL BE INTERACTING WITH PEOPLE DIRECTLY I MAY GET NAUSEATED AND VOMIT. IT IS BETTER IF I CAN GET SOME FRESH AIR LIKE IN THE CAR WITH THE WINDOW DOWN, BUT I GET THE CHILLS DURING THIS TIME ALSO WHICH SEEMS TO MAKE IT WORSE. SOMETIMES WHEN I GET LIKE THIS I GET PANICKED AND FIGHT MY HUSBAND ABOUT GOING ANYWHERE OR I CANCEL THE APPOINTMENT IF THAT IS THE CASE. I FIND THAT WHEN WE ARGUE I GET OVERLY EMOTIONAL AND UNABLE TO CALM DOWN WITHOUT HIM GRABBING MY ATTENTION TO CALM ME.I SPENT MOST OF MY TIME WHEN I WAS YOUNGER IN THE SCHOOL NURSE OFFICE OR IN THE INFERMERY AT CAMP BECAUSE I WOULD GET SICK.IT SUSIDED WHILE I WAS PREGNANT WITH MY KIDS BUT IT IS BACK WITH A VENGENCE. I HOPE THAT IS ENOUGH INFO. IF THERE IS SOMETHING I MISSED ON ANSWERING, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. THANKS

WELL AS FOR MY THIRST I ALWAYS HAVE COTTONMOUTH BUT I AM UNABLE TO DRINK A LOT BECAUSE IT MAKES ME FEEL WATERLOGGED. WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD I CRAVE I NEED SWEETS AND BREADS. I CANNOT DRINK MILK AND HAVE A HARD TIME DIGESTING FATTY MEATS. I AM GETTING OVER A VERY HIGH CHOLSTERAL LEVEL AMD I KNOW THAT IT IS MY DIET AND LACK OF EXERCISE IN WHICH NOW I HAVE CORRECTED AND AM ALMOST BACK TO NORMAL LEVELS. I FIND RELIEF WHEN I CAN GET SOME FRESH AIR AND GET AWAY FROM WHATEVER CAUSED THE ATTACK. SOMETIMES THAT ISN'T ENOUGH AND IT DOESN'T GO AWAY UNTIL I VOMIT. I DO NOT GET VERY GOOD SLEEP BECAUSE I AM ALWAYS WOKE UP BY A BAD DREAM OR TWO OR THREE. I AM VERY SCARED OF THE DARK(AFRAID OF WHAT I CAN'T SEE), WAS AFRAID OF THE WATER WHEN I WAS LITTLE AND KEPT ME NOW FROM PURSUING MY DREAM OF MARINE BIOLOGY. I ALWAYS DAYDREAM OF HORRIBLE THINGS HAPPENING TO MY LOVED ONES AND GET EMOTIONAL WHEN I THINK OF WHAT I WOULD BE WITHOUT THEM. I HAVE TO SNAP MYSELF OUT OF IT.I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A VERY SOCIAL PERSON, GET ALONG WITH OTHERS,AND BE VERY OUTGOING, BUT IT IS AS IF WHEN I BECAME AN AT HOME MOM I FORGOT WHAT THE WORLD HAD TO OFFER AND I MISS BEING COMFORTABLE

I FORGOT TO ANSWER THE LAST PART OF YOUR MESSAGE. I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS IS RELATED BECAUSE I DO NOT KNOW WHEN IT STARTED, BUT MY SISTER WAS MOLESTED BY MY FATHER STARTING AROUND AGE 4 AND IN TURN SHE MOLESTED ME. I DO NOT BLAME HER AND I HAVE GOTTEN OUT MY ANGER AND MADE MY PEACE WITH MY FATHER. I DO SEE HIM ONCE IN A WHILE HIM, BUT I DO NOT SEARCH HIM OUT. I DID AS MY SISTER TLD ME TO ALL MY LIFE BECAUSE SHE WAS SO HATEFUL AS LONG AS I HAVE KNOWN HER (BECAUSE OF HIM) THAT I WANTED HER APPROVAL. COME TO THINK OF IT I WANTED EVERYONES APPROVAL INCLUDING FRIENDS. I HAVE GROWN OUT OF THAT NOW AND I FEEL THAT IT TRUELY IS NOT AN ISSUE ANYMORE. THE ONLY PERSON HANGING ON TO THIS WOULD HURT WOULD BE ME SINCE HE DOESN'T FEEL SORRY.I NEVER BLAMED MY SISTER BECAUSE SHE LEARNED IT FROM HIM AND WE ARE GREAT FRIENDS TODAY.IT HAS MADE MY MOM, SISTER AND I VERY CLOSE AND WE ARE ALL VERY HAPPY WITH HOW OUR LIVES ENDED UP.
