Dear Pat,
Homeopathy is probably your only hope! Please tell us what is characteristic about your child, not including the common symptoms of the disease, like low blood count, etc. What makes your child unique: his likes and dislikes; food desires and aversions; his thirst, sleep, behavior. If you read some of the other posts here, you might get an idea of the kind of info we need. Was he ever a normal child? Thanks, Snoopy |

Dear readers:
My 5 year old son was diagnosed with a medical condition called 'Beta Thalassemia - Major', last year. This is a genetically inherited disease from the parents. Obviously my wife and I have the same disease in a minor form, called - 'Beta Thalassemia - Minor'. My son is not growing. He is 5.5 years old, but weighs only 30 lbs (13.6 kgs) and is only 98 cms tall. The reason for that is his Hemoglobin is only 6.5 (normal range is 12.5 - 14.5). His body is not making enough red blood cells. The only medical treatment currently known is blood transfusions every month and on top of that daily, painful 'chealation therapies' to remove excess iron from the body. My questions to all those who might be familiar with this disease is that, can Homeopathy help? Info. on this disease is available at the Thalassemia.com website. Thank you and God bless. |

Dear Snoopy,
Thanks for responding. Right now, he is almost a perfect child, except for his low height and weight; as a result, he looks like a three year old. He lacks energy to bike and walk for a prolonged duration. He does not eat very well, either. It is known that if untreated, thalassemia patients have a life-span of about 15 - 20 years; I think it has to do with the bone marrow overworking itself due to low hemoglobin. I can provide you further details if you think you can lead me to help. My email is vikramanu@hotmail.com. Like I mentioned in my earlier post, you can learn more about thalassemia from their website. This disease is very common in the Mediterranian countries, Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Far East. Thanks again. Patnitop |

Its not possible to cure thallesimia major, because the gene defect is often major and usually has a deletion, but Ferrum-ars may help to improve Hb level, prolong life and improve its quality.

Dear Dr. Bhatia,
Thanks for your response. It is rather disappointing to learn that Thalassemia Major can not be cured through homeopathy. However, I would like to enquire about Ferrum-ars. Does it have any side effects? My son is currently on a experimental study sponsored by Childrens Hospital, Oakland. He is being administered Hydroxyurea, a drug that is given to cancer patients during choemotherapy. So far there has been very minor improvement in his Hb level. I just want to ensure that there wouldn't be any reactions as a result of a new drug. My wife also happened to get in touch with a homeopathy specialist in India, who suggested Framphos 6X. Do you know anything about this drug? Patnitop |

Dear Pat,
Framphos 6X is really Ferrum Phosphoricum--homeopathic iron phospate--a wonderful tissue salt--a mineral, not really a drug, and will probably work wonders, taken 4 times a day, I imagine; it has no side effects and won't interfere with the drugs your child is on. It's true, if you are in California, you are in the best place to find a homeopath. Good luck! Snoopy |

Well! If some homeopath can prescribe on the basis of individuality, then there is nothing better than that. But my understanding of Thallesimia still says that it won't cure ur son. Others have a right to differ. Ferrum-ars and Ferrum-phos both belong to the same 'Ferrum' class of drugs. ferrum-phos is very commonly prescribed for anamia. I suggested Ferrum-ars on therapeutic bases as it covers more sever hypochromic anamia, with splenomegaly and hepatomegaly, and debility(all of which develop in all patients of thallesimia major sooner or later). As far as ferrum-ars or ferrum-phos reacting with hydroxyurea is concerned, all I can say is that homeopathic medicines being given in sub-physiological doses, usually r not known to have any direct bearing on the pharmocological effects of allopathic meds.
