International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology An Organization Dedicated to Evidence Based Health Care P.O. Box 608531, Orlando, FL 32860-8531 T: 407-298-2450 * F: 407-298-3075 * Email: mziff@iaomt.org * Internet: www.iaomt.org NEW RESEARCH CONNECTS MERCURY TO ALZHEIMERíS DISEASE! Research conducted at the University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine has demonstrated that trace amounts of mercury can cause the type of damage to nerves that is characteristic of the damage found in Alzheimerís Disease. The level of mercury exposure is consistent with those levels found in humans with mercury/silver amalgam dental fillings. The exposure to mercury caused the formation of ìneurofibrillar tangles,î which are one of the two diagnostic markers for Alzheimerís Disease. The scientists found that other metals, including aluminum, did not cause the damage. Previous research has shown that mercury can cause the formation of the other Alzheimerís Disease diagnostic marker, ìamyloid plaques.î The research, published in a peer-reviewed medical journal, is accompanied by a video visual presentation of the effect. Utilizing digital time-lapse photography, this video shows rapid damage to the nerve cells after introduction of minute amounts of mercury. Funding for this video was provided by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT). SPECIAL NOTE: The University of Calgary has placed a copy of the video on their site at: http://movies.commons.ucalgary.ca/mercury/ To view the video you will need "Quick Time" Player which can be dowloaded from the site if you do not have it. This video will be available to media contacts (only) through: Miss Karen Thomas Media Relations University of Calgary, Faculty of Medicine T: 403-220-2945 F: 403-210-8141 Email: thomask@ucalgary.ca Media Embargo Date: 26 March 2001 Title: ìRetrograde Degeneration of Neurite Membrane Structural Integrity of Nerve Growth Cones Following In Vitro Exposure To mercury.î Authors: Leong, CW; Syed, NI; Lorscheider, FL. Journal: NeuroReport, 12(4):733-737, 2001. BIOPROBE COMMENT: This study should remove all doubt regarding the role that dental mercury from amalgam fillings plays in the development of Alzheimerís Disease (AD). Although the American Dental Association would like to have you believe otherwise, science has clearly demonstrated that there is a positive correlation between brain mercury levels and the number and surfaces of ìmercury/silverî amalgam dental fillings. The mercury levels that caused the devastating damage to nerve cells in the above referenced study were 100 to 1000 times below those found in the brains of people with ìmercury/silverî amalgam dental fillings. In 1997, researchers at the University of Calgary Medical School and the College of Pharmacy at the University of Kentucky clearly demonstrated that exposing rats to the same levels of mercury vapor that can be released from ìmercury/silverî amalgam dental fillings caused the mercury to interact with brain tubulin and disassemble microtubles that maintain neurite structure. The identical neurochemical lesion of similar or greater magnitude is evident in Alzheimer brain homogenates from approximately 80% of patients, when compared to human age-matched neurological controls. (Neurotoxicology 1997;18(2):315-324) In 2000, researchers at the Neurobiology Laboratory, Psychiatric University Hospital in Basel, Switzerland using neuroblastoma cells exposed to mercury demonstrated an increase in production of amyloid protein that makes up the amyloid plaques as well as significantly increasing the phophorylation of Tau protein. I've been thinking about the late Iris Murdoch's Alzheimer's recently [with the new book about to be published by her widower, John Bayley].
One of the charming things about their married life was the domestic messiness and lack of obsession with "lifestyle enhancements" that people of their class are so often enchanted by. However, an aspect of this was that they very often ate canned food - baked beans, tinned meat etc - far more than most people do. And if Dame Iris were susceptible to metal poisoning [her mother also suffered dementia I think, so the susceptibility was inherited] there is the most likely cause of the illness in my opinion. It's shocking that such a mighty mind could have been felled by such a mundane axe. |

Thanks Lisa
I'm going to show the article to my dentist. When I insist on white fillings even in back teeth, I think it confirms his opinion of me that I am rather batty!! ![]() I also refuse his attractive pink water and then start taking arnica whilst I'm still in the chair. However, in his favour he is VERY patient, open to new ideas, oh yes and exremely attractive ![]() Ooops! Oh yes where were we? Mercury poisoning, not attractive dentists!! After all that metal poisoning I find it hard to concentrate! I'm probably a lost cause as far as that's concerned... Anna, I remember my mother used to give us quite a lot of tinned fod in the 60's. She used to heat the tins in pans of hot water, which probably wasn't a very good idea, as far as leaching metals were concerned. Dear Colleague,
Please avoid all the aluminium pots and pans and antidote what was taken over the period by taking low potency alumina for couple of days. There is a lot of hope for every one, if one is on Homoeopathic remedies. |

Wouldn't it be a great research project for someone...to find out if people with false teeth, depending on when they got them, of course, don't get alzheimers? My father is 84 and has had false teeth for last 50 years...sharp mind.

Well my father had false teeth from age 20 no exposure to mercury that i know of and yet died of Alzheimers age 75
I have some amalgam fillings but am severly allergic/sensitive to Aluminium having been toxic with it 20 yrs ago when quite literally i was a hairs breath from Alzheimers age 40 I know plenty of other people in same boat along with Alzhemers victims who also never had amalgam fillings or exposure to mercury so I reckon the researchers need to do a bit more work on this one |

Pat: is it possible that when your dad had his teeth removed...IF he had fillings with mercury in them...that they didn't know how to protect the person from ingesting the mercury. Then he had you...and passed on the mercury sensitivity to you. I'm not saying that aluminum doesn't play a part in your make-up, but is a possibility in your mind. Just trying to cover the bases here as you know my interest.

Good question to which I doubt I will get an answer since he walked out on us when I was 8 and is now dead
I do know that a gold crown in my mouth caused trouble (lichen planus and an excema rash on my wedding ring finger )tooth broke off 6 months ago and remains had to be removed and hey presto now i can wear my wedding rings again I am having my amalgam fillings removed one at a time when they need touching and ensure correct proceedures and use of sulphur etc is done ......... However it is very clear that I was sensitive to Aluminium from birth as just like litters of puppies and kittens I would reject all food cooked in Aluminium pans until I was absolutely starving and only because of virtual force feeding and " I will send it to starving children in India " threats from my mother did I eat at all The Homeopath who treated me quite literally rolled back a lifetime of symptoms and i was able to recognise every one of them back to birth ........i did not have any amalgam fillings put in my teeth until about 12 years old , my 2 daughters have none at all yet one of my Grandaughters is clearly affected by aluminium too I also recognise its effects in my Mother but she swears that Aluminium has never hurt her My husband has had all his Amalgam fillings correctly removed by the No 1 Holistic Dentist in the UK after several experts insisted they were the cause of his ill health but there has not been a blind bit of difference only a huge bill |
