Hey Barb,

Coffee can indeed be a depressant--overworking the nervous system to the extent that it causes exhaustion, if it is taken in large doses. It is commonly called the "paradox effect".

I haven't looked in the repertory yet to see what rubric this would be found under--but generally this is true of all homeopathic remedies--if it can cause an action in one direction, it can also cause the "opposite" action too.
