Question

I posted this question on the women's health forum but the discussion bb looks like it is more active.
I am a midwife and a new student to homeopathy. I have used remedies in birth for a long time but only recently enrolled in a school of classical homeopathy. I am having problems finding a remedy for an accute case of plugged milk ducts. I have used remedies for cracked mipples but am having trouble finding a ruberic for plugged milk ducts. Anyone have any experience with this?

Hi,
I don't know of any specific rubrics for plugged milk ducts but there rubrics for
generals, suppressed mothers milk
chest, milk suppressed
chest, milk absent
and phatak has
lactation, milk, absent, scant (I tend to like Phatak for acutes)
agnus castus, urtica urens, bryonia and lac-d are worth a closer look, but as ever the mentals will be the best guide.
Hope this is of some help

Thanks for responding. I sat down with the repertory and we came up with nodules in mammae in the chest section. With the other symptoms and personality of the lady we are going to try Lycopodium 10M one dose and 200c to take home and use as necessary ( if she responds to the remedy).
I will let you know how it works.

Hi,
As I read this, it seems to me that the potency is quite high with 10M for a physical acute, even if the remedy is the correct choice. Personally, I had nursing problems taken care of with 200C potency just fine. Maybe some more experienced homeopathy can give their opinion to that ?
Good luck with that mom -
Claudia

"an accute case of plugged milk ducts"

Just wondering, could it be engorged breasts that don't release the milk?

Bryonia works well for hardness of the breasts in this situation.
Belladonna if mastittis is suspected.
Pulsatilla for over production of milk that doesn't release through the nipples.
Calcarea also.
Cold breasts sometimes keep the milk in, but warming the breast will sometimes allow the milk to flow.

10m is much too high!! I rarely even use that potency with long term patients unless the lower potencies have worn off and I am very sure of the remedy. 30c is fine for first aid situations. High potencies can have long lasting and deep reactions if misprescribed.

We learnt in Clinical Materia Medica that Phellandrium was useful. Pain in milk ducts, intolerable between nursing, pain shoots inwards. Purulent discharge.
Another remedy we studied was Castor Equi for sore, cracked nipples.

As a lactating mamma with lactating friends, I have found calc-c 200c to be quite effective.

Mother should also not consume too many fats, caffiene. Drink plenty of water. NO BRA AT NIGHT! And nurse baby frequently; offer affected side first until symptoms start to fade.

If the plugged ducts (I remember having had that when I nursed my firstborn) are painful and still painful when the baby nurses, the breasts are hard and very sensitive, then Phytolacca may be considered.
