Hello everyone, my three year old daughter is trying to get over the stomach flu. She had 3 days of vomiting with no fever. On the third day, I took her to an MD to have her evaluated for signs of dehydration, the doctor said she was okay. It has been 4 days since the vomiting stopped and she is still sleeping most of the day, moaning about her tummy. She will get up and play for brief periods, but tires quickly and wants to go back to bed.

Some personality changes have occurred also. She never before would sleep with a blanket, if you tried to put a blanket on her she would push it right off, even in her sleep. Now she wants them. Also, during her illness she had 2 episodes of diarrhea and is now so terrified of it happening again that she is holding in her urine and her bowel movements. This is making her tummy hurt even more. I am not sure what to do to help her.

I am hoping for a remedy that will help speed her recovery, and help her not be afraid to go to the bathroom.

If you need more information I would be glad to give it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Meredith

Almost certainly Gelsemium - especially if the child is thirstless.

Could be Kali-phos if the discharges are orange-yellow, but that is less likely.

Anna - I was thinking more in the line of Arsenicum especially as this seems to be one of the G.E. remedies at the moment. I saw the chilliness, obviously the gastric problems and the fear.

Meredith - does your daughter want to sip cold water. What does she want to drink and to eat? How anxious about her health and what is going on is she? When is her worse time of day? Is she sleeping all night?

Hi, thanks for the responses.

She has been asking for food and drinks. I am trying to urge her towards bland foods and clear liquids. Toast, chamomile tea, water etc. She keeps requesting chocolate milk of all things. Oh, and she wants the chocolate milk warmed up. Water and flat soda she will drink at room temperature but not cold.

In general she is not an anxious child at all. This fear she has, of going to the bathroom is very out of character for her.

She just seems so tired and listless and it worries me. She is usually cheerful, talkative and active.

I have given her ars.alb 30x about 3 times since the beginning of her illness, but not since the vomiting stopped on Sunday, should I try again?

I think there is a proving from the repeated Arsenicum.
If Arsencium suppresses a discharge without being a similimum, the mental symptoms can develop.

Where to go from here depends on whether the child's constitution is known. If it is, that remedy should sort things out.
If it is not known, I would take a guess - that's all it could be - and suggest a single dose of Nux V 30 might restore.

Dear MER,

How is your daughter doing? I just saw your post today, and considered repertorizing the symptoms you gave, but as almost a week has gone by, I thought I'd find out first if you gave nux-v. and if you still need help. Are there any new symptoms you'd like to report?

Dear MER,

Just for the heck of it, I repertorized your case anyway. Gelsemium, Phosphorus, and Kali-phos. were all pretty much tied, with Arg-n. and China in second place. Ars. came in roughly 3rd. I used the following rubrics: Weakness after influenza, stomach flu, fear from diarrhea, desires chocolate, weariness, low vital heat.

Dear Snoopy,
Very good rubrics there, where did you find fear from diarrhea?? I mean which book. I couldn't find it at all in Kent's.

Anyway, she is doing much better. Her appetite is back, and she finally has her normal toilet habits back. Thank goodness!

I did give the Nux. but it is hard to tell if that is what helped, or just time.

Thank you so much to everyone who responded. I really appreciate it.

Sincerely,
Mer

Dear Mer,

you may need to update your rep. As good as Kent was, there are a lot more modern and complete repetories now (The Complete, for example, no pun intended).

Dear MER,

In Robin Murphy's repertory (which I love because it's completely alphabetical and he's added new chapters to make things easier to find; for example, I found your child's desire for chocolate in a chapter titled "Food"): Mind, fear, diarrhea, from-arg-n.(2), ars.(1), gels.(3), ign.(1), kali-p.(2),op.(3), verat.(2).

Sincerely,
Snoopy
