Our 3 month old has had occasional bleeding in his stool. My wife is nursing and has given up dairy products. This seemed to have helped until recently the problem flared up again. She thought nuts might be the problem and gave them up last week. Today he had his worse bleeding episode to date. My wife has kept a journal of what she eats and couldn't pinpoint anything unusual. Any ideas?

Don't know if the homeopaths need it but it may be wise for you to go into detail about the pregnancy and birth. Anything unusual? Any drugs during labor? Has child had any vaccines yet? When did problem first start? are stools normal otherwise. Describe the blood, is is bright red, black? How much? This info may be helpful.

Pleas have him first examined by a local doctor. So manay things could be responsible for the bleeding. Once we have the doctor's findings, we shall be in a better position to help you.

Has this child been checked over by a Doctor? I would refuse to prescribe if the child was my patient until this had been done. Is the child well and thriving, putting on weight?

Yes, he has been seen by a doctor. The diagnosis was "food induced protocolitis." He has had the first series of vaccinations. His stool has occasional stringy or flecks of red. Problem started at four weeks of age. Mt wife was given an intrathecal (sp?) during delivery, otherwise nothing unusual.

She did take Flovent as her asthma kicked up with a vengeance. The baby has normal stools for several weeks then blood will appear several times in a day--not a lot, and not all have blood.

His condition is otherwise normal, he is thriving without any sign of discomfort. He has no rashes or pain with bowel movements. He has gained over 6 lbs in four months and is a happy little boy.

Is the problem with him or us? Are we worrying for nothing?

Does your wife still have sore cracked nipples? Sometimes the baby will injest blood while BF'ing if mom has even small cracks. If mom still has sore nipples you may want to see a lactation consultant or talk to LLL.

My wife's nipples are normal (she belongs to LLL and is becoming a leader).

I knew a LLL Leader whose baby had the red flecks in diaper. It was related to dairy in the mother's diet. She had to discontinue ALL dairy, which meant being an avid label reader. The good news is, since the mother couldn't sneak a Little Debbie here and there she lost more than her pregnancy weight. And some more good news, the baby seems to have outgrown the intolerance to dairy at around a year. So the mother can enjoy dairy again (in moderation).

Please keep us posted as to your baby's progress.

Email me if you would like this LLL Leader's email address. I'm sure she would love to give your wife support.

Hello

My son now ten weeks seems to have exactly the same problem which also started at around four weeks of age. On seeing my GP who is also a homoeopath I have been advised to avoid wheat products as well as diary. This seems to be doing the trick although it does take some intensive label reading as things are often sneaked into products. Jasper is also under going constitutional treatment as sensitivities to food especially to gluten run in the family.

Don't give up hope you are not alone. Definately give Homoeopathy a try, I have two other rudely healthy kids thanks to it !

Sara
