Question

Hi All,
Just went to pick up my daughter from riding and one of the horses named, Domino has an injured left hoof.

She was shod two weeks ago and the man who shod her put two of the nails in too far and those two nails went into her laminae (sp?) - the soft part of her hoof.

There are two holes - one is crusting over and the other is weeping cloudy yellowish/whitish discharge.

The riding instructor said that she was worried that perhaps the nails might have been rusty when shod.

And, straight after being shod - Domino trotted up lame....
The man immediately took out one nail......Domino was still lame..... Beryl poulticed it that night. Then she called the man back the next day....and he took the other nail out.....nothing improved with the poultice...and then another man came and diagnosed the problem as laminitis...but it wasn't laminitis....no improvement really since the poultices.

This past Saturday (4 days ago), she called a vet....he made a hole in one of the absesses which opened and drained...

Beryl thought the hole was too big and didn't want Domino to suffer, so
she made the other hole herself...and that one is less severe when I looked at it...it seems a lot better than the other hole.....

Domino urinates a lot....... Beryl said she will urinate loads and then half an hour later - she will urinate heaps again...always has done this.

Age: 8 years
-all normal vaccinations (including tetanus - all up to date)
-really healthy
-no injuries in past
-temperament: solid to ride...gets on with job.
-She's an Appalousa - white with brown spots (lovely coat!)

She's NOT on any anti-biotics!!!!! Beryl didn't want to give her any.

She sometimes bites other horses when in the paddock. When she first came from the Royal Stables to the Riding school she bit the other horses while in the paddock, but now she has settled down and doesn't bite.....

I got the feeling Domino doesn't like change... She doesn't bite people (except when people put saddle on and pull round
the girth too tight) then she'll have a nip - nothing serious...but she will nip to say, Hey - get the hell off!

Anyhow, I'm trying to ring her now - to find out what she's using in the poultice ....(something the vet gave her)....but she's willing to take the poultice off and give Domino a remedy to help her....she hates seeing her suffer like this...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
I will check on here again soon to see if there is anything I can take to her in the morning!!

*** IMPORTANT: What is the best method of administering the dose to Domino?? Is putting 3 pillules and/or granules on her tongue okay? Or do I need to do it another way? Beryl says we can get a dose in her mouth if we need to (without a lot of trauma)...
BUT PLEASE ADVISE.
Many thanks!!!!!
Much appreciated.
Lisa

Hi all - I found the name of the Poultice that is being used. It is a commercial product - and it is called Animal Lintex. I don't know the ingredients, but do know they are allopathic...and not herbal or natural.

(If anyone is familiar with Animal Lintex, perhaps you could tell us what is in it?)

Awaiting advice....thanks again!

Animal Lintex Poulice: Tragacanth 1.12 gr/dressing and Boric Acid 0.39 per dressing. Considered a wound dressing. I'd use Ledum even if vaccinated for tetnus.

Forgot about administering remedies. I find horses are able to spit out the smallest particles, so often crush pellets and pour into small hole in carrot or apple and cap the hole with the plug cut out or dissolve and toss on their grain........that way they salivate a good deal while chewing.

School horses have a tough life and looks as though this school has a very bad horseshoer!

Hey Kiddo - we missed ya!! glad you're back.

For future reference, in a past post by gpm, GM mentions to never give a horse any potency over 30 as the results would be a catastrophe.

See Ya,

Thanks for the advice on how to administer the remedy!
Much appreciated!!!

Funny you say that about the horseshoer! There is no one here that is properly qualified or trained to do this!
Basically, this is a 3rd world country and the people employed to do this type of work are from the Indian continent, with no training and they (culturally) don't pay great attention to detail. (I know I know, I'm gonna get blasted, but I don't care...cuz I've been here tooooo many darned years and I'm NOT politically correct to the point where I dole out compliments where they are not warranted). Also, the people hired to do these jobs are usually very indifferent to animals, as well....of course, there are always exceptions, but I'm referring to the majority.

Anyhow....Beryl watches closely when they are shod, and this has helped greatly! She has over twenty horses and loves them like her children, and dotes on them, etc....so no need to worry about the horses, as they are in the best hands - especially in this part of the world.

So, now I will order the rem, as I don't have this one (damn!)...and will give it to Domino asap!!
Thanks!
Lisa
