Here's a pleasant topic!
Baby of 4 weeks - no birth problems, breastfed. Has green motions once or twice a day with "sharp screams"(mild) Mother gives Cham 6 after which she calms down and settles. I don't think this is overdosing (yet) since the most doses in one day have been 3. (about 9 doses since start of problem) Mother has looked at her diet and eliminated a few things, but hasn't yet found what is causing this. Anyone any ideas? |

Thanks for your replies.
Barb-I'll ask the mother about her sweet intake. Gary - Seems a bit too specific to give Calc for imperfect digestion, but will take more info - Barb - Green poos are not stringy, mucosy or grassy. Do you know why there could be an exces of bilirubin - could it be immature alimentary system? Rochelle - Good one except diarrhoea isn't slimy, but is after nursing (but then everything else is after nursing too, since the mother is feeding baby every two hours) Interesting that in so called "gripe water" the main ingredient is magnesium I think. Do you mean Bry italics and mag ordinary type? in Murphy (I don't have that book. |

Bry (2) = Bryonia
Mag C (1) =Magnesium carbonicum In a rep there are gradings 1, 2, and 3. £ is the strongest (or mare often to be expected to work). For all you homeopaths out there I know that is a simplistic view but have no intention of going into the meanings of the gradings argument!! However IMO I would go up on the Chamomilla to 30 when needed or even 200C - one dose [This message has been edited by Rochelle (edited 07 August 2000).] |

Motions once or twice a day is not diahrrea. I am not a homeopath, but from what I've learned here, I would be inclined to go with Gary's recommendation. give calc, mother can take a recommended dose and baby will get it through mother's milk.

When I left hospital with my first baby I was given a sheet of paper explaining what colour motions to expect and when (from memory - which is not that good) they start out nearly black at birth and for first few days and then dark green, then green, then mustard, then yellow (not sure how long green phase lasts but perhaps health visitor would know).

Excess bilirubin is not uncommon in babies of this age and I belive it is a normal physiological resonse. Is baby jaundiced at all?
My son recieved treatment for this as he was severly jaundiced (birth trauma - ventouse and forceps). He had UV light therapy and on of the side effects is loose greenish poo. If the baby is getting a lot of sunshine at the momnet it may be that this is the cause. My childminder calls it summer poo ![]() It is important to keep breastfeeding. If it is the sunshine it may stop when there is less. One thing which I found irritated my son both before and after he was born were onions and leeks, gave him colic after birth and me hearburn before, another thing which irritated was sweet pepper. If it is lose poo, it may be scouring the child around the anus and making it uncomfortable. Try to keep lots of fresh air on it if possible ie nappyless. Janyce
