Potash free diets - the Pitcairn diet is potash free, as far as I can tell . Potash enters the commercial diet through the non-nutritional fillers they put into it , and you really don't want to know the source of them...

I am not so sure about raw fish, the fish I feed my cats is cooked, although the meat is raw. I have heard that raw fish can cause digestive problems for cats (not sure where I heard it , so I will check it out), but in my experiece GM has usually been right...

If you are going to consider changing your cats diet to include fresh, raw food, get the Pitcairn book "Natural health for cats and dogs". Although you can't get all the ingredients in the UK, you can make subsitutions and my cats are looing well on it. The diet is not as complicated as it sounds in the book.

I have discovered an email list for people feeding their cats a natural diet. It is called "naturalCATS" and is at egroups.com, it is a great source of information.

If you are about to have a baby, this may not be the best time for you to change their diets if it is you who are responsible for feeding them. The diet is a lot of work in the early stages. That said, you could add raw food to their existing diet - although I think that would be difficult with a dried food. I found out very early the cats like eggs ( really quick meal), and I have mixed raw meat with commercial food. I think that such a chronic problem probably needs a total change.

My cat who had chronic gingevitis really has benefited from the change. My 2 others can "manage" on commercial food, but if Pilchard does not get a high proportion of raw food his gums start to break down again. My cat was only a year older than yours when his problems began.

Hope the birth goes well. You probably won't read this for some time .
