I started my professional career in the 60s as an applied mathematician - a topologist, in fact. I spent the first several years writing grant requests. At the same time, my former college roomate got her PhD in Biochemistry and worked as a medical researcher at a major university. What we both realised was that unless a grant request was written around an already accepted idea, there was no chance in hell of getting research money. I do understand that moneys are scarce and that the only way to ensure success is to fund ideas that are already proven. I count myself lucky to have gotten out of the field with my brain cells still intact.

I always knew there was a connection between my mother's alzheimers and her arthritus in her fingers. When she got alzh...her fingers straightened out...

Why do people with arthritus wear copper bracelets..to put more copper into their bodies...? That would mean they have too much zinc? Or like my son who had white spots all over his fingernails...and taking 50 mgs of zinc a day for about a month did nothing to change that...cause his body couldn't absorb the zinc...why not?..where are those damn scientists when you need them...so if the body can't absorb the zinc...would it then accumulate somewhere in the body? And after the zinc remedy...he was able to absorb zinc after that..???

My mother started dancing when she got alzheimers...when she went blind...she tapped her feet to any music...Is this common to alzheimers..the tapping of feet...maybe the restless feet syndrome of zinc deficiency...?

My mother always ordered water in from a place..drank gallons of water...must have gotten a small mountain of extra minerals in her body. the article warns against tap water...says..drink distilled.

Its all so interesting to me. I wish I knew more.

I think its possible to use the information we have on these substances to better understand how a pathology like Alzheimer's can result. It is really interesting, Carole, that you've made these observations in actual physical cases where you've seen symptoms change or exist in connection to different minerals and their absorption in the body.

That restlessness in the feet--a major zinc symptom--and the general restlessness of that disease...zinc is a huge remedy for anorexia, and states of nutritional deficiency so bad that they can become life threatening. What if diseases like Alzheimer's developed out of the body's life long inability to process or absorb or store or metabolize various nutrients? I try to imagine what that kind of understanding would do to the whole study of nutrition.
