Hi there

My nephew is 4 weeks old and is quite puky on breast milk. His birth weight was 9 lbs 10 ozs and he had a protracted birth with waters breaking 5 days before he actually emerged. He just didn't seem to want to be born, and slept an awful lot in the days following birth. He eventually emerged with the help of a ventouse. He was jaundiced and did not take to feeding well. A homeopath I know mentioned calc carb 6 but my sister's question is how often and when eg before a feed, after a feed etc. She has pilules to crush up.

Thanks for your advice.

Hi,
We generally like a lot more information to prescribe on. For that a detailed questionnaire is used.

Its common for some babies to spit up a lot when they burp, and Calc Phos is generally the remedy that helps the best with that, though this not necessarily something abnormal to deal with.

We avoid unnecessary dosings, but one could observe the action of a single dose of Calc Carb 6C and watch for improvement/change over a couple of days. Crush 2-3 pills in a spoonful of water and give it to him.

All the best,
doctorleela

As Dr. Leela said mroe information is needed. Please send me email if you need further help.

Note Mothers milk in the first few weeks produces a substance known as colustrum whic hlep in building the immune system in the baby. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT that you try and stop the puking.

Arsenicum Album might also apply. However, I would recommend holding off on giving any remedies. Instead try the following:

-Let the baby lie down on the stomach 20mins before feeding
-Make sure mother takes a no rice, no beans diets.
-Try and stick to whole grains
-Drink warm water(8 oz) after every meal...eat more frequently instead of a large meal)
-Make sure you use the latest technology oriented bottles...eglaytex ventair, etc...
-Give small feedings more often. Try 2oz every 2 hrs instead of 4 ozs every 3 hours. You get my drift.
-Every time the baby asks for milk do not give it right away. Let the baby be on the stomach (even if crying for a few minutes). Try giving the pacifier. Let her build up her hunger a bit more.

If you do decide to give calc carb do it before the last feeding before her big nap (typically around 10pm for most kids this age). Monitor and report her condition

Good luck.

I had assumed that it was common knowledge that as recommended by J T Kent , when a baby cannot absorb the mothers milk - then give the mother silica 30 or 1m

well, just to be fussy...there is a rubric for vomiting mother's milk--with one remedy. Abrotanum.

Colostrum is only produced for a limited number of days after the birth--it seems that if the baby hasn't been able to get some of this by now, the baby won't be getting much more of it.
