As a midwife I saw the labial fusion happen twice. We followed the instructions given in Barbara Bates' "Guide to Physical Examination." Quote: Fusion of the labia minora is seen commonly. It may be partial, with only the posterior portion of the labia fused, or it may be complete. A thin membrane that joins the labial edges is easily lysed with a cotton swab or a probe. The labia will also separate if an estrogen-containing cream is applied to the labia once or twice daily for several days." Both times the fusion was corrected by using a cotton swab (Q-tip) to gently break the membrane. The older midwife I apprenticed with always advised mothers with infant girls to be "gentle but slightly aggressive when cleaning the babies" in order to prevent the fusion from happening. Hope this helps. Oh and the babes didn't seem to mind when she preformed the lysing of the membranes.
