I always have trouble with this statement (even when I read it in the

Then how does one proceed when the onset of illness was *birth*? (As
is *quite* frequently the case nowadays; I have to look no farther than
my family for examples of that.) I know what answer *I* use (and of
course these ill-from-birth children can be successfully treated), but
I am curious what you will reply.
