dear carol
you asked:

what about the materia medica in the boger's characteristics? No good? What would be the first materia medica to buy that you would recommend?

the mm in the front of boger's repertory is derived from boenninghausen's characteristics materia medica. it is the most concise way to learn the most important features of the remedies.

if after analysing a case in steps 1-3, you find that all the unusual, striking symptoms of the case match the characteristics of a remedy given in boger's characteristics, you can be confident of the remedy. re-read par 153 in this light and you find this is what it means.

for a practitioner, essential materia medica to have are the original provings - hahnemann's CD's and MMP - also allen's handbook for the remedies not proved by hahnemann. anything by jahr is also worthwhile and perhaps as a first materia medica of a serious nature for a student, hull's jahr would be a good idea.

as regards the idea that what hans teaches is taught in all homoeopathy colleges - all i can say is - not in my experience.
