Hi David,

This is probably advanced Cirrhosis with resulting ascitis, and edema of the lower limbs etc. I'm sure they're fed up to doing repeated ascitic taps, and it must be weakening the patient furthur. That's what Joel may have meant - they don't want to repeat it any more.

The bleeding is porbably passive through esophageal varices, hence I suggested Hamemallis. They coudl have probably already tried the latest methods for stopping bleeding varices and failed.

Poor chap. CHina could be a consideration for loss of vital fluids - to make the end easier.
