I would have to imagine that in the early days
Hahnemann took crude substances, and we all know about Hering and the Lachesis snake he milked and in doing so, was over-come by the snake venom and asked his wife for a full report on his behavior
and symptoms when he finally recovered. But normally a proving is conducted with remedies, not substances.
