dave, I get an impression of Lycopodium from your description. Sounds like this guy has been dominated and battered emotionally since childhood, leaving a sense of inadequacy in whatever he does. His body image, so he thinks, is lacking. His earning capacity (even though good) is unsuitable. Lycopodiums have a tendency to sabotage their relationships. It's like anything that invites reprimand from peers, family or whomever, increases self-doubt and embarrassment. In his dreams he has an outlet at least, he receives applause. But in waking life most things seem reduced to a fear of ridicule and a fear of responsibility. Hence, he just really closes off in self-protection. Would love to hear some modalities from your case-taking.
