lemm, so sorry to read about the news you and your family have just recieved, this must be a very difficult time for you all.
Just so that you know there is no hard evidence that proves that aluminium has anything to do with alzhemier's or any dementia type illnesses.
For anyone who may wish to know there are over 53 known types of dementing type illnesses.
Are the consultants aware of your father's history of alcohol abuse? If not make them aware as this is very important, they will or should do anyway prescribe vits B for him as this is the vit that alcohol kills and in my experiece has alleviated some symptoms in people who have history of alcohol abuse but have a dementia type illness.
And from someone in the "know" take heed of what Janyce was advising, she was talking a lot of sense, you all need to be aware of your rights, and not be fobbed off by the medical profession.
Also like Janyce advises, help him put his life in order, allow him to still feel in control. I know it is an awful thing to think of and talk about with him, but you should discuss the future.I.e if things get too difficult at home, and he would have to go into a home allow him to choose the type of home he wants, even let him choose one. This may be a bit hard going especially if you start looking aroud them, but it does help some people.Only you and your family will know if your dad can handle it.But it will also help you in the future, there will be no heartache, squabbling or guilt when the time actually comes.
I wish you and your family the best, there are many support groups in local hospitals and phonelines aswell as on-line. Make use of them all.Get to know others who are in the same situation, they will fill you in on everything,( I know this form expereince aswell!)But it will help, even though it doesn't sound like fun.

##Aricept## is only prescribed in the early stages of dementia, which is usually too early for most people to notice anything wrong with patner/parent. It has major side-effects while it is being taken aswell as when it is withdrawn.

Take note, Ginko Biloba may help alleviate the loss of memory/forgetfullness, but it also increases ones libido which has caused problems in the past .
